Your record today

Chrome extension, for Tractor and Silo

Every new tab shows one day from your past, in your own words. Signed out, it is a quiet countdown to the dates you choose.

Fig. 1 One memory from this day, in the owner’s own words, five of its years in turn. The map of the place shows with the veil on. The names are blurred until you hover, and the photos load only when you reveal them. Shown over Tractor and Silo’s demo account, Eliot Marsh, who is fictional, on an invented street plan.

What it does

  • One day from your past, every tab. A memory from this date in an earlier year, picked at random from every year your record has on it: the place, the note you wrote, a line about the day. When Tractor and Silo has drawn a map of the place, the day comes up as a poster, with how many years ago in amber and the outline of the state or country.
  • The names stay veiled. The people tagged that day and the 200 who come up most are blurred until you hover. The photos load only when you hover over the picture or lift the veil, and until then a drawing or the map stands in. V lifts the veil, and every new tab drops it again.
  • Add the why. A line at the foot keeps a note on what you are doing right now. It joins the moment in your record that covers it, or waits for your iPhone to send that visit.
  • Signed out, a countdown. The next of your own dates, counted to the second. The dates never leave the browser.
The new tab signed out, light: 26 days until the Chicago shoot, a clock counting the hours, minutes and seconds, and a line counting to two more dates.

What it keeps, and where

It talks to one server, your own Tractor and Silo account at www.tractorandsilo.com. It reads today’s memory once a day, and keeps it in this browser so every new tab draws at once.

Your countdown dates never leave the browser. A photo you reveal loads from Tractor and Silo’s own storage at Amazon Web Services, through a link that lasts fifteen minutes. The map of a place comes from the same storage, through a link that lasts about a day. There are no ads and no analytics, and it never reads your browsing.
